Kenya eHTS Implementation Program

mUzima mobile application seamlessly integrates with KenyaEMR, an extension of OpenMRSTM to support electronic HIV Testing & Screening Services (eHTS) in resource-constrained settings. mUzima app has been implemented in various healthcare facilities across Kenya to collect data, screening, monitor, and enroll HIV positive clients into care.

OpenMRS and KenyaEMR are the most used medical record platforms in Kenya. So far, it has supported its affiliate implementations to collect data of over 516,790 clients which translates to about 90% of its total Kenya’s eHTS clients.  mUzima app which is tailored to work seamlessly with KenyaEMR to support the course has been rolled out in more than 218 health centers and county hospitals in 23 counties across the country. mUzima is a scalable mobile application with a capability to accommodate the continuously growing numbers of implementations deploying it to support HTS services in their settings. Impact-RDO, LVCT Health, LWALA, FACES and AMPATH are just some of the many implementations using mUzima application to offer eHTS services in the underserved areas in Kenya.

The application is equipped with the following HTS forms for collecting data and improving healthcare;

  • HTS Eligibility Screening Form: It is used to screen clients prior to HIV testing.
  • HTS Initial Form: This is a form for HTS services that collects demographic info, encounter location, population type, HIV testing history consent, HTS strategy, etc.
  • HTS Retest Form: This is a form for retest services that collects testing consent, HTS strategy, HTS entry point, HIV test 1/ test 2, HIV results from outcome and TB screening results.
  • Contact Listing Form: List all contacts to an index case and their relationships.
  • HTS Referral Form: For HTS linkage, referring positive clients to referral facilities.
  • HTS Linkage Form: For HTS linkage, it allows the client to be linked to a healthcare facility and to a health worker. ARTs start dates are also collected in this form.
  • HTS Client Contact Tracing Form: It is used to trace HTS clients’ contacts.

Implementations providing HTS services to the populations in remote areas find it convenient using mUzima as information can be collected offline and then sent later with access to the internet or local wifi. Healthcare providers can also with ease transfer health and demographic data directly to the KenyaEMR database thereby avoiding paperwork and saving time.

mUzima app has quite notable features that simplify the health providers’ work.  For example, the historical data view enables the users to retrieve the patients’ medical records thus making informed decision making when administering drugs and ordering lab tests to patients.

The application strives to support and improve HIV patient care at every level. In Kenya, it has provided improved service delivery in the healthcare sectors across the country.
